Traffic shows on Stratux but not in your app
Short answer: the Stratux web interface lists what it hears, and your EFB then applies its own filters. If the Traffic page is busy and your app is quiet, the cause is usually an EFB filter, a target with no position, or the traffic layer being switched off. It's rarely a receiver fault.
How traffic reaches your app
Your EFB gets traffic from Stratux as GDL90 over the Wi-Fi network. The web interface uses a separate path, so a healthy web page proves the receivers work. It doesn't prove the app is showing everything.
Common causes
| Cause | What to check |
|---|---|
| App filters by altitude | ForeFlight® shows traffic within about ±3,500 ft of you. Targets further above or below are hidden. |
| App filters by distance | ForeFlight® has an Ignore Distant Traffic setting on its Stratux Devices page. It can make traffic seem to drop out, for example when you descend. |
| Target has no position | Mode S-only targets are listed in the web interface but have no full position. They don't reach the EFB as normal traffic. |
| Ownship filter | A target matching your ownship code is left out on purpose. |
| Traffic layer off | The app's traffic layer can switch off after a Wi-Fi drop or after the app is backgrounded. |
Stratux itself has no filter by aircraft type or airline. Any filtering of that kind happens in the EFB.
Mode S targets without position
A Mode S-only target gives Stratux an altitude and a rough signal, but no latitude and longitude. Some apps, Garmin Pilot among them, may not show such targets at all. Others draw them as bearingless targets.
Stratux has a setting for this on the Settings page, GDL90 bearingless target circle emulation. It's off by default. When on, Stratux takes the closest estimated target within ±2,000 ft of you and under about 15 km. It then sends 8 fake targets in a circle around your aircraft. You see one nearby target, not every Mode S target in the web interface.
Ownship filtering
Enter your aircraft's hex code in the Ownship Mode S/OGN Codes field on the Settings page. Stratux then leaves your own aircraft out of what it sends to the app. That is the fix for ghost traffic that follows you. If traffic altitudes look wrong in ForeFlight®, see Using Stratux with ForeFlight®.
Traffic layer resets
Several pilots report that the traffic layer has to be turned back on after a Wi-Fi drop, after backgrounding the app, or after reopening it. Reports are mixed across ForeFlight® versions, and there's no confirmed fix. It looks like app behavior, not Stratux behavior. Re-enabling the layer or toggling the external-device connection is the usual workaround.
Steps to narrow it down
- Open the Traffic page at 192.168.10.1 and confirm targets are listed and updating.
- Check the app's traffic layer is on and the Stratux connection is active.
- Check the app's distance and altitude settings.
- Look at whether the missing targets are far above or below you, or at a long range.
- Try a second EFB. If it shows the traffic, the first app is the problem. If neither does, check the connection and your settings.
For other causes of empty traffic, such as antennas and ground-relay coverage, see No weather or traffic on Stratux.
ADS-B traffic is advisory. A target missing from your display doesn't mean the sky is clear. Keep looking outside.
