ADS-B Ground Station Map

Tower signals reach roughly 40–60 nm at altitude, but often under 1 nm on the ground. No weather while taxiing is normal; most receivers need ~1,000 ft AGL. Why?

ADS-B ground stations in the United States and Canada

This map shows every FAA ADS-B ground station (also called a radio station or ground-based transceiver) plus the volunteer-run Canadian CIFIB network. These towers broadcast free FIS-B weather (NEXRAD radar, METARs, TAFs, AIRMETs, SIGMETs, PIREPs, TFRs, winds aloft) on 978 MHz UAT and relay TIS-B and ADS-R traffic, the data a portable ADS-B receiver feeds to your EFB. If you fly near a tower, you can receive them.

Search for an airport, city or tower ID, or tap Near me to see the three closest stations and how far away they are.

Reading the map

The FAA assigns each UAT ground station to one of four altitude tiers, which sets the coverage area and the set of weather products it uplinks:

Why you might not see weather or traffic yet

ADS-B is line of sight. In the air, a receiver typically hears a tower 40–60 nm away, but on the ground that often drops to under 1 nm. No weather while you taxi is normal; most pilots see it appear around 1,000 ft AGL near a tower. Ground-relayed traffic (TIS-B and ADS-R) also depends on radar coverage and on an ADS-B Out–equipped aircraft nearby. Our pilot's guide to how ADS-B works explains why.

Put this weather and traffic in your cockpit. Stratux is an open-source, dual-band (978 MHz + 1090 MHz) ADS-B In receiver that works with most popular EFB apps, including apps compatible with ForeFlight®. Buy one ready to fly or build your own.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find the ADS-B tower nearest me?

Tap Near me above the map, or type your airport or town into the search box. The map lists the three closest stations with their distance in nautical miles.

Why does my ADS-B receiver show no weather on the ground?

Ground stations are line of sight, and from the ramp you are usually below their coverage. Weather normally appears after takeoff, often by about 1,000 ft AGL near a tower. It does not mean your receiver is faulty.

Do ADS-B towers work in Canada?

Yes. The volunteer-run CIFIB network operates 978 MHz UAT stations in Ontario, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Nova Scotia that broadcast the same way as the FAA network. Any US UAT receiver works with them.

Where does this data come from?

US stations come from the FAA's published list of ADS-B ground stations; Canadian stations come from CIFIB. See About this map for details and how to report a missing tower.
