GO / NO-GO

Would you fly today?

The airplane is fueled. Your brother-in-law is already in the right seat. The TAF says PROB30, and the wedding is at 2. GO / NO-GO is a free pilot decision game that puts you in that parking-lot moment, over and over, with real-format weather and a passenger who is certain it is VFR in his heart.

How to play

  1. Set your Personal Minimums while you are calm: a simplified PAVE worksheet for ceiling, visibility, crosswind, gusts and more.
  2. Brief the flight. METARs, TAFs, winds aloft, radar, AIRMETs, PIREPs, NOTAMs, density altitude, the briefer, the hangar, and a look out the window. Every source costs minutes, and the deadline does not wait.
  3. Decide: GO, GO with up to three mitigations (delay, fuel stop, a firm turnaround point), or NO-GO with an alternative.
  4. Fly it and make one to three timed in-flight calls, then read the Reveal and your "There I was..." story.

The Daily Flight is the same sky for every pilot, with one graded attempt a day. Afterwards you see how everyone else decided, and you can share a Story Card. A Year of Weekends is a campaign with life meters, Case Files teach classic accident patterns, and REAL SKY uses today's actual METAR and TAF at your airport.

Decision versus outcome

Poker players call it resulting: judging a choice by how it turned out. Good flight instructors and Annie Duke's Thinking in Bets warn against it. Weather is a probability, not a script, so GO / NO-GO grades your Decision Quality from the risk you accepted given what you could have known, your own minimums and your mitigations. The Outcome is separate, and a Luck meter shows the distance between them. Your own rules come back to judge you: "You set a 15-knot crosswind limit. It was 18 gusting 26. You went."

Frequently asked questions

Is GO / NO-GO a flight simulator?

No. You never touch the controls. It is a decision game: you read a briefing, weigh the weather against your own minimums and your passengers' feelings, then choose GO, GO with mitigations, or NO-GO. The painted flight is the consequence, not the skill.

How does the grading work?

Your Decision Quality (A to F) is computed from the risk you accepted given what you could have known, your own Personal Minimums, and your mitigations. The Outcome is graded separately, and a Luck meter shows the gap. You can make a great call and get unlucky, or a poor call and get away with it, and the game tells you which.

What is REAL SKY?

REAL SKY fetches today's actual METAR and TAF for an airport you pick and asks whether you would fly a one-hour VFR trip right now under your minimums. Later you can check back and see how the forecast compared with what really happened.

Is it accurate enough to plan a real flight with?

No. The weather is generated, the aircraft data is simplified, and REAL SKY is for practice. Get a real briefing from 1-800-WX-BRIEF or 1800wxbrief.com, and make your own go/no-go decision with your instructor's guidance.

Safety

GO / NO-GO is a game. The weather and events are fictional, the aircraft data is simplified, and nothing here is flight planning or weather-briefing advice. Before any real flight, get an official briefing (1-800-WX-BRIEF or 1800wxbrief.com), use your own minimums, and talk to your instructor. Real pilots turn around, and they are right to.
