PHONETIC BEE
A free daily spelling bee with an aviation skin.
How to play
PHONETIC BEE gives you seven letters laid out like the cylinders of a radial engine. One letter sits in the center, and every word you make has to use it. Words need at least four letters, and letters can be used more than once. Tap the cylinders or type on your keyboard, then press Enter.
- A four-letter word scores 1 point. Longer words score their length.
- A word that uses all seven letters is a FULL THROTTLE and earns a 7-point bonus.
- Your rank climbs from Student to Solo, Private, Instrument, Commercial, CFI and ATP. Find every word to unlock the hidden Chief Pilot rank.
- Aviation words get a plane badge and a short definition when you find them.
Why pilots like it
If you like a good spelling bee aviation puzzle, this one doubles as a vocabulary drill. Pilots live in a world of precise words: aileron comes from the French for "little wing", and the pitot tube is named for the French engineer Henri Pitot. Seeing those terms spelled out every day keeps them fresh. The title is a nod to the ICAO phonetic alphabet that pilots use on the radio so that letters are never misheard.
A new puzzle starts at local midnight and everyone gets the same seven letters, so you can compare scores with other pilots on the daily board.
Questions
Is PHONETIC BEE free?
Yes. It runs in any browser with no account and no download. There is one new puzzle each day.
Do I need to be a pilot to play?
No. Most answers are everyday English words. The aviation words are the bonus: each one shows a definition, so this aviation word puzzle teaches as you play.
What is a FULL THROTTLE?
