FLOATPLANE FISHING
A bush pilot, a de Havilland Beaver on floats, and six hours of Alaska daylight. Free in your browser.
How to play
You start at the Lake Hood seaplane base with some cash, a tank of avgas and a rod. Pick a lake, river or coastal inlet from the map, check the forecast and decide whether the weather is worth the risk. Land on the water with one timing bar, then choose your depth, lure and spot, cast, set the hook when the bobber twitches, and keep line tension in the green while you reel in.
- Every pound of fish you keep scores 10 points. Fish you release score 5 per pound.
- Your cooler holds 250 lb. Fly it home to sell the catch and fund fuel, bait and upgrades.
- Watch for bears, fog, leaking floats, ramp checks and tips from fellow pilots.
- The Daily Challenge gives everyone the same weather and fish for the day, with unlimited retries.
Why pilots like it
Floatplane flying is about reading conditions: ceilings, gusts, fog banks and the way a glassy lake hides the surface. On glassy water pilots use a power-on, constant-descent landing because there is no horizon to judge height by, and wind direction against the long axis of a lake decides how much room you really have. A weather picture on a tablet fed by a portable ADS-B receiver such as Stratux is a real help in the bush, and you can read how ADS-B works if you are curious how that data reaches the cockpit.
FAQ
How is my score calculated?
Kept weight in pounds times 10, plus released weight times 5. The all-time Trophy Room board ranks the single biggest fish, scored as weight times 10.
What is the Daily Challenge?
The same seeded weather, fish and events for every player on a given day, reset at your local midnight. Retry as often as you like. Your best haul counts.
Who is Old Grandad?
A legendary lake trout over 58 lb who lurks in the deep water of one remote lake. He only turns up on some days, and he likes a deep spoon or herring.
Do I need to know how to fly?
No. Check the forecast, pick a landing direction and press at the right moment on one timing bar. Good judgment still pays off.
