The Oshkosh Trail

Dysentery is replaced by carb ice. Free in your browser.

How to play

You start in Santa Monica with a crew, a vintage airplane and a plan to reach EAA AirVenture at Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Choose a profession, buy supplies, and decide each day how fast to fly and how much risk to take.

Why pilots like it

Flying to Oshkosh is a real pilgrimage. Every summer thousands of airplanes converge on Wittman Regional for the biggest fly-in in the world, and the arrival procedure is a NOTAM that tells you to fly at a set speed and altitude, follow the tracks, and rock your wings when the controllers ask.

Good pilots plan for the things this game throws at you: density altitude when the airport is hot and high, carb ice in humid air, and fuel reserves when the headwind is stronger than forecast. A Stratux receiver helps with the rest by showing weather and the dense crowd of traffic in the pattern.

FAQ

Is this like The Oregon Trail?

Yes, it is a pilot's parody. You pick a profession, load up a crew and an airplane, then manage fuel, cash, weather and mishaps across ten legs of the journey.

What is the Fisk arrival?

The Fisk arrival is the standard visual approach into Oshkosh during AirVenture, flown at a published altitude and speed while following railroad tracks to the Fisk reporting point. In the game it is a skill section at the end of the trail.

What is carb ice?

Ice that forms inside a carburetor when moist air cools as fuel vaporizes. It can choke a piston engine even on a warm day, and carb heat is the cure. Ignore it in this game and your trip may end early.

What is the Daily Challenge?

The same events and weather for every pilot for the day, with unlimited retries. Your best score goes on the daily board.
