THE COMMUTE

Live in one city, work in another, and get to report on time.

How to play

You live in one city and your base is in another. Your goal is to get from home to base and hit REPORT before your report time. Pick a flight on the departure board (tap it or press its number). At the gate you can list for a seat on standby, ask for the jumpseat, or buy a positive-space ticket for more money and less drama.

Load numbers are only an estimate, and the plus-or-minus shrinks as departure nears. Your own airline has priority, but nonrev families and deadheading crews can bump you. Track four resources: time, cash, sanity and rest. Sleep at home, the crash pad at base or a hotel, and keep your phone charged or the load numbers disappear.

Four trips unlock in order, from a straightforward cross-country run to a holiday weekend, and a daily trip gives everyone the same loads and events. Score rewards time to spare, cash, sanity, rest and jumpseats.

Why pilots like it

Commuting is the least glamorous part of airline flying. Many pilots live far from base, ride standby on their own airline or another, and plan around a list of other people who are also trying to get home. The game compresses that gamble into a few tense minutes, with just enough humor to cover the stress.

If you fly a small airplane yourself, a Stratux ADS-B receiver helps with traffic and weather awareness. Start with getting started with Stratux if you are new to it.
